Friedman-Schwartzの大著"Monetary History of the United States 1867-1960"の、大恐慌の章だけのダイジェスト版が再発売された。原著は、大恐慌の原因を「有効需要の不足」とする通説に挑戦し、その責任がFRBの誤った金融政策にあることを明らかにして、経済学や経済政策に大きな影響を与えた古典だが、膨大なデータの並ぶ900ページ近い本で、通読した人はまずいないだろう。本書も読みやすいとはいえないが、大恐慌の本質がマネタリーなものだったことを立証する点で、現在の危機を理解する役に立つ。
